This is a true story.

My husband walks our 13 year old dog twice a day. I guess you might say he is a Citizen on Patrol. You get to know your neighborhood pretty well when you walk it twice a day. There’s never been any reason to be suspicious of anything before.

But this past Friday morning, he was walking the dog about two blocks from our home and about a half a block away, he saw a woman running out of her house screaming. She ran across the street to the neighbor’s house. Of course, he didn’t know exactly what was going on, but she seemed like she was in extreme distress.

We are members of a neighborhood Crime Watch Group and our NPO (Neighborhood Police Officer) has told us many times, when in doubt, call 911. So that’s what he did.

Our city has a class that teaches you all aspects of our Police Department. One of the activities is going on a shift with a police officer, it’s called a cop ride along or a police ride out. A friend of mine was on a ride out that morning and they received that 911 call. She did not know my husband had called 911 and he had no way of knowing that someone he knew would be involved with the call.

Later that day, she called me and informed me what had happened and I immediately knew that it was the same situation that my husband had called about. So she filled me in on the details. The woman was a mother of a young child and she had taken her to school. When she returned home, she entered her home to find a young Hispanic man in her house. He tried to cover her mouth with a Chloroform. soaked cloth to knock her out. In addition to that, he had a knife. More than likely, he was going to knock her out and rape her. Somehow, she managed to get away from him and that’s when my husband saw her running out of the house.

The Outcome

Pretty scary situation. I found out today that the same day about 3 blocks away he was seen in the back yard of another house. But he managed to get away. However, the police were able to find and arrest him. So our neighborhood is able to breath a little easier knowing that he is behind bars.

That’s all it takes is a concerned citizen, taking the time to call 911 to report something that’s out of the ordinary. It could be something as simple as seeing a strange person in the neighborhood who looks like they don’t belong there and is acting nervous or suspicious. Or an obvious emergency situation. It really doesn’t matter. A neighborhood crime report is also available from your Police Department.

The bottom line, if you have doubt whether you should call 911, that’s the time to take action. Someone’s life might depend on it.

Attempting to recreate Big Bang conditions, CERN scientists break energy record

Scientists at CERN may be getting closer to Higgs boson the particle that could help explain the birth of the universe billions of years ago.

Scientists came closer than ever to witnessing “Big Bang”-style conditions on Thursday after revving up the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN research centre to smash sub-atomic particles together faster and harder than ever before.

Physicists in the control rooms punched the air as multi-coloured arcs flashed across their screens, debris thrown up by the collisions of some of the millions of protons flung around the vast underground circuit at close to the speed of light.

“This is a great start to the 2012 run. It promises to be an amazing year for particle physics,” said Oliver Buchmueller, a member of the CMS team that is conducting one of the two main experiments at CERN, which lies on the French-Swiss border.

The proton-smashers’ big prize is the Higgs boson, the particle which – if it exists – explains why things have had mass since the birth of the universe 13.7 billion years ago.

Ramping the collider up to 8 Tera electron-volts, 15 percent more energy than last year, should produce up to 10 times more data than the previous two years of work on trying to replicate the conditions of the birth of energy and matter at the dawn of the universe.

More data means more certainty about whether the Higgs lies within the last narrow band of energy yet to be fully explored, or if its existence can be conclusively ruled out, which would entail a rethink of textbook physics and mainstream science.

But the new high speeds also mean more background noise and static for Higgs-hunters around the world to overcome.

The first tantalising glimpses of what might be the Higgs, postulated by British theoretical physicist Peter Higgs in 1964, were spotted in the Large Hadron Collider last year and revealed by researchers in December. CERN is now zeroing in.

“It really is a very small window, which has got smaller and smaller,” said CERN director-general Rolf Heuer.

After discovering the mystery boson – often dubbed the “God particle” to the strong disapproval of most scientists and of Higgs himself – CERN could turn to more “science fiction” targets such as extra dimensions and the “dark matter” believed to make up around 25 per cent of the cosmos.

Food And Drink ? The Way To Make A Chocolate Cake At Home

It?s time to wave goodbye to cake mixes that come in a box. Why use a box to make a cake when you can use a homemade chocolate cake recipe? When you put the ingredients in the cake yourself, you will know exactly what you will end up on your table at the end, and that?s worth far more than the little amount of added effort it takes to make a chocolate cake recipe from scratch. Besides that, everybody knows a home made chocolate cake recipe is going to taste miles better than what comes out of a box. The likelihood is that you already have a lot of the ingredients too.

What you?ll need:

- Half cup of butter or margarine

- Two (2) cups of sugar

- Three medium eggs

- 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla

- 3 squares of baker?s chocolate

- 2 cups of flour

- 2 tsp. of sodium bicarbonate

- Half a teaspoon of salt

- One (1) cup of sour cream

- 1 cup of boiling water

Preparation:

1. Mix together the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl.

2. Crack the eggs into the bowl and continue to mix.

3. Then add the vanilla and chocolate and mix vigorously.

4. Add the remaining ingredients. (It helps to sift the dry ingredients.) Use an electric beater if you have one handy as it will make the process much easier.

5. Pour the mix into a lightly greased cake tin.

6. In a heated oven at 350F, bake the cake batter for thirty-five (35) minutes. Keep a watch on it near the end.

A few notes regarding allergic reactions and lifestyle preferences.

Vegans: Some vegans choose to avoid consuming butter or margarine or perhaps eggs and sour cream. As these ingredients represent a major portion of the recipe I?d suggest avoiding this particular recipe. I have created several alternate recipes for vegans which can be found on the Cake Recipe Secrets site.

Celiac?s: Rice flour is an alternative; but it makes the batter thinner leading to a dryer baked product.

Nuts: Whilst the recipe is nut-free some people may decide to add nuts to the recipe for their texture. My suggestion would be walnuts or perhaps almonds. The almonds should be thinly sliced and peeled.

Also, if time is a problem and you want some form of frosting then a thin layer of double cream with a drizzle of honey is a good short-cut.

When the chocolate cake has finished baking, simply remove it from the oven to cool down. Before it is completely cooled, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delicious combination.

Marine still outspoken despite facing dismissal

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? A Marine facing dismissal for running a Facebook page called Armed Forces Tea Party that criticizes the Obama administration is still speaking out but has been getting little support from military law experts and free speech advocates who say he may have crossed the line.

The Marine Corps notified Sgt. Gary Stein Wednesday that it is moving to dismiss him for violating the Pentagon’s policy barring troops from engaging in political activities.

The military has had a policy since the Civil War limiting the free speech of service members, including criticizing the commander in chief.

David Loy, of the American Civil Liberties Union in San Diego County, said he has not followed Stein’s case closely, but that based on what he has seen in the media, he thinks there may be a legitimate concern on the part of the Corps about Stein appearing to be speaking as a member of the armed forces because of his Facebook page’s name.

“The military has a very strong interest and appropriately so to remaining neutral,” he said. “The last thing we want is our military taking side on political issues.”

Former Navy officer David Glazier, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, agreed.

“He’s really rubbing the government’s nose in it,” he said. “It’s really hard to have sympathy for him.”

Stein said he is not swayed. He said he received hundreds of emails from service members and the public in support of him.

“They’re entitled to their opinions, but I still think this is a freedom of speech issue,” Stein said. “I’m standing up for the Constitution.”

Stein, a nine-year member of the Corps, said he started the page to encourage fellow service members to exercise their free speech rights.

The Marine Corps said in a statement that it decided to take administrative action after Stein declared on Facebook that he would not follow unlawful orders from Obama. He later criticized the comments of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

According to Pentagon directives, military personnel in uniform cannot sponsor a political club; participate in any TV or radio program or group discussion that advocates for or against a political party, candidate or cause; or speak at any event promoting a political movement. Commissioned officers also may not use contemptuous words against senior officials, including the defense secretary or the president.

Stein said his statement about Obama was part of an online debate about NATO allowing U.S. troops to be tried for the Quran burnings in Afghanistan. In that context, he said, he was stating that he would not follow orders from the president if those orders included detaining U.S. citizens, disarming them or doing anything else that he believes would violate their constitutional rights.

Stein said in addition to being discharged, he would have his rank reduced to lance corporal if he is proven to be in violation. He said he was removed from his job at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego on Wednesday and given a desk job with no access to computers.

Stein was first cautioned by his superiors at Camp Pendleton in 2010, after he launched his Facebook page and criticized Obama’s health care overhaul. Stein volunteered to take down the page while he reviewed the rules at the request of his superiors.

He said he determined he was not in violation and relaunched the page. Stein said he now plans to fight the charges. He had applied to extend his service, which was set to expire in a few months.

Former military prosecutor Lisa Windsor said since the Civil War, military members have been testing those limits and gotten in trouble. Now those cases can go global because of the Internet.

“I think they’ve been very lenient with him so far,” Windsor said.

Stein said he will not wear his uniform when he speaks to tea party supporters but he likely will mention his case.
